Very pleased with this booster!, January 22, 2011

I was looking to move my almost 5 year old into a booster. I debated whether to get this one or the previous model, which was available for about $20 less than I paid for this one. It was difficult to locate the differences, but what sold me on this one is that they had redesigned the secure guard clip to be one strap instead of two. Several reviewers complained about the comfort of the 2 strap secure guard. I love that feature – I feel it makes my child safer. She loves the seat. It is comfortable and easy for her to secure herself. The other big difference between this and the previous version of the parkway is that it has optional LATCH attachments. They were super easy to use and it keeps the seat from moving around as the child gets in and out and also keeps it from being a potential projectile in an accident if your child is not riding in the booster. Very very pleased with the seat. Really, my only complaint at all is I would have loved to get the pink seat in the old style. The new color pink looked too garish to me for use in the car so we went with gray.

This is a nicely designed seat, but has few issues. We like the latch connectors that are easy to use, overall comfort and fit. The fabrics choices are poor compared to older Britax seats, like the first generation of Parkway booster. Cardinal is slippery and noisy nylon. Would be easy to clean, but would you let your kid sit on something so uncomfortable, particularly in summer? Nah. We returned it and got Cloudburst instead – I think this is the only soft-touch fabric available for the SGL model (it is similar to touch to Maui Blue we have on Britax Frontier 85 seat).

Also the belt guides are over-designed and can cause the belt to jam, depending on the position of the belt and with what force it retracts. This is a serious safety issue if the kid leans forward and the belt does not retract. Luckily the belt guides from Parkway SG model can be retrofitted to it (they fit perfect), although they have the opposite problem of letting the belt slip out (Hello, Britax, I wonder, is it that hard to design decent belt guide? Some common sense would be all that’s needed one would think).

The seat has sharp edges in the back so you definitely want to use a seat protector in order to prevent scuff to the upholstery.

Advice – if you are not going to use LATCH you’re better off getting Parkway SG. We like LATCH because it keeps the seat in place and prevents it from becoming a projectile if unoccupied and not belted in in an accident.

UPDATE 9/29/11: The replacement guides for Parkway SG that you can directly order from Britax are perfect! They are different and improved than “stock” ones I saw on a Parkway SG. They do net let the belt slip out and there is no bump that would cause it to jam. Parkway SGL with the replacement SG belt guides is a perfect booster seat.

I received our booster on July 29 and was very nervous about using it. Our son is only 3.5 but by his build, they recommend using a booster. Still, I wasn’t 100% comfortable with it so I chose the Parkway SGL because of the latch and (more importantly) the SecureGuard.

Well, one week later on Aug 6, he was involved in a fairly serious car accident with his grandmother. I was out of town but was told the paramedics commented that the booster was great and did exactly what it was supposed to do. Our son had only a little tenderness in his chest and shoulder and otherwise, not even a scratch.

Unfortunately, we had to buy a different model to get him home in because this one is only available online. However, I may still buy yet another. Clearly, it did exactly what we needed it to do. The day after the accident, he was playing like nothing happened.

I realize there are many safe seats out there… but this one is a winner all the way around to me. Easy to secure, easy to use, low profile (I have a Corolla) and provided amazing protection…
